Beram Kayal urged Celtic to get in touch; now he’s reportedly headed back to Israel

Beram Kayal has finally managed to secure his next move after signing a deal with Israeli club Bnei Sakhnin, the Argus has reported.

Kayal has had a summer of speculation surrounding him after Brighton released the midfielder at the end of last season. The Argus states that he’s been keeping himself fit thanks to training sessions at Hove Park and Preston Park respectively.

The source also states that Kayal’s deal is believed to involve a managerial or administrative role at the end of his contract.

And it all comes after he was itching for Celtic to make a move for him instead. Kayal spent five years at the club between 2010 and 2015 before heading south, and a dream return was on his mind as he looked for his next move.

Speaking to the Daily Record, Kayal was quoted as saying: “Tell Lenny I want to come back! Everyone knows I would love to go back to Celtic. It started my career in Europe and it would be amazing to do 10 in a row with Lenny. I’ll have the phone on waiting for him to call if he needs me!”

Kayal’s role in any potential 10-in-a-row has been played

Even though it was clearly an ambition of Kayal’s to secure 10-in-a-row with the Hoops, he can be safe in the knowledge that he has firmly played his part in our historic decade of dominance.

The Israeli international arrived in Glasgow at a time when Celtic were by far second best to Rangers after the disastrous Tony Mowbray era. Kayal was a major influence on the Lennon side who started something big to turn the tide on our rivals.

He left the Hoops in 2015 having managed to secure 132 appearances for the club and six trophies. He was a key influence in four Scottish Premiership wins in particular – something that should keep him satisfied in knowing he’s played his part in our nine-in-a-row run (Transfermarkt).

However, a return to Parkhead this summer was never going to be realistic. Celtic have Scott Brown, Callum McGregor, and Olivier Ntcham operating in there regularly. Outside of that trio, there’s David Turnbull, Ismaila Soro, and Luca Connell all vying for game-time.

It was never an area Celtic had to increase their stock in. Instead, ensuring that we bolstered our centre-back and striking options was the main goal. The club managed that whilst holding onto all of our key players. Signing Kayal was never anywhere near the top of our priority list.

But even so, we wish him all the best in his new role back home in Israel. He was a fierce competitor for the Hoops and deserves the very best of support from supporters.
