Neil Lennon’s update on James Forrest has been met with widespread delight amongst the Celtic support.

The Celtic boss confirmed ahead of the Dundee United game tomorrow that the winger is just a couple of weeks from returning to training. This comes after Forrest picked up a horrendous ankle injury in September.

Celtic have generally struggled down the wide areas this season. Forrest currently has no natural replacement behind him in the pecking order. Jeremie Frimpong has the attributes to play further forward, but Lennon continues to like him more as a right-back.

Therefore, Forrest’s return at some stage in the new year will be hugely welcome. It will finally give us plenty of pace, directness, and title-winning experience in the final third once more.

It had been a slow start to the season for Forrest before his injury of course. The Celtic man had only managed two goals and one assist in 10 appearances (Transfermarkt).

Celtic have struggled without Forrest in there

However, it can’t be denied that since his absence, our season has declined rapidly. There’s been more to that than just a long-term injury to Forrest, but it hasn’t helped.

When he returns, he could be coming back to a team high in confidence given recent results. Should Celtic carry that into the new year, there’s no denying we’ll only be boosted further by Forrest’s return.

It remains to be seen if Celtic still sign another right-winger in January of course. The Daily Record reported last night that the Hoops wanted another one in and that they were considering their options.

That likely won’t change just because Forrest has returned. Even if Kris Ajer is a capable right-back deputy, Lennon still seems to want him to move back to his regular centre-back slot. That means Frimpong will have to continue as a right-back for now.

Even so, the general reaction to the Forrest update has been positive. Albeit, some aren’t too happy with Lennon labelling Forrest as “like a new signing”. Here’s a look at some of the Celtic fan reaction below:

In other news, Dave Cormack’s Celtic hopes have been dealt a huge blow today.
