Celtic are linked with Liverpool striker Taiwo Awoniyi, and their fans aren’t happy.
The £5m-rated Nigerian striker hasn’t been able to get a British work permit. On Wednesday, 90min linked the Union Berlin loanee, who has scored goals in the Bundesliga, to both Celtic and Rangers.
Union Berlin have been the Bundesliga’s surprise package this season, and Awoniyi is certainly contributing. With 5 goals in 13 for Union (Transfermarkt), Liverpool’s serial loanee may have finally come good.
Awoniyi’s contract is owned by Liverpool, but the forward has been on loan for the last five-and-a-half years. The striker hasn’t been able to secure a work permit to play in the UK.
Having endured spells with clubs including Mouscroun, Mainz and Gent, he’s finally hitting the net with regularity in Berlin.
Union are just outside the Champions League places in the Bundesliga (Sky Sports), in just their second season following promotion.
The striker is closing in on a Nigeria cap, which may make his work permit application easier. If that’s the case, the Reds may look to hold on to the striker.
Liverpool fans, for their part, aren’t keen on letting the Nigerian go. Certainly, not for the mooted price.
