The fallout over Celtic’s League Cup win continues as Rangers lick their wounds after another Hampden defeat to the Parkhead club.

Celtic won the 119th trophy of their history to officially be crowned Scotland’s most successful club after winning the League Cup on penalties.

Goals from Celtic fullback Greg Taylor, Daizen Maeda and Nicolas Kuhn in regulation time weren’t enough to see off Rangers so it took penalty kicks to separate the two teams.

Daizen Maeda scored Celtic’s winner after Kasper Schmeichel saved Rangers’ third penalty from Ridvan Yilmaz and it led to Billy Dodds highlighting something that the Parkhead club have in their locker that his his old team are missing.

Celtic have the ‘mindset of champions’ after beating Rangers

On punditry duty covering the game, Dodds praised Celtic’s mentality as he hailed Brendan Rodgers’ side for getting the job done in Hampden.

Dodds told the BBC, “Celtic found a way. Rangers brought so much to it, they ran them so close and pushed them all the way, but Celtic just have the mindset to hit five perfect penalties.

“They have the mindset of champions. Rangers kept at it and showed the right mental strength.

“But, you’ve got to find a way to actually get yourself over the line and win the trophy. It’s the only thing that changes the narrative.”

Billy Dodds comments on the gap between Celtic and Rangers

For some strange reason the gap between Celtic and Rangers has raised its head after the cup final and Dodds puts his two cents worth in.

“You win the trophy,” continued Dodds, “It doesn’t matter how, it’s the only thing missing from today. They gave so much.

“Now and again, Celtic are going to struggle like they did today, but they still found the way.

“Rangers can take so much going forward as to what they have to do to close the gap to Celtic and start winning trophies.”

A cup final cannot be used as a gauge of how far apart Celtic are from Rangers. If that was the case then it could be argued that teams like Inverness Caley Thistle and St Johnstone are as close to Celtic as Rangers are after they both won the cup competitions in their recent history.

I suppose trying to take comfort and ignoring the fact that Philippe Clement has set a new record for Rangers failing to beat Celtic is easier to do than fact the facts.

Celtic are the dominant club in Scotland and Rangers have got a long way to go before they can catch up with them both on and off the park.
