Championship side Blackburn Rovers last night announced the signing of Celtic youngster Connor McBride.

McBride, who signed for Celtic back in January 2018, has signed a two-year deal with the English outfit after failing to make a breakthrough at Parkhead.

The youngster spent last season with Stenhousemuir on loan, where he made 16 appearances and bagged one goal (Transfermarkt).

The striker leaves the club just a week after fellow Lennoxtown youngster Barry Hepburn departed for Bayern Munich (Daily Record).

McBride is expected to join the Blackburn under-23 side to start off, as it looks as though the youngster will have to bide his time before being given any first-team opportunities.

Too many players ahead of McBride in Glasgow

At 19, McBride certainly has plenty of time to make it in the game, but that was never going to happen at Parkhead.

Celtic currently have Odsonne Edouard, Albian Ajeti, Patryk Klimala, and Leigh Griffiths occupying the first-team spots. You then have the likes of Jonathan Afolabi and Jack Aitchison in the development squad.

His spell at Stenhousemuir also just wasn’t impressive enough. One goal in 17 appearances wouldn’t have been the breakthrough campaign that the Celtic coaches would’ve been hoping for.

At 19, it’s vital that McBride continues his development elsewhere and at a club where he will continue to get regular game-time. That means that he may have to leave Blackburn this summer and head elsewhere on another loan deal.

You can argue that leaving was the best thing the young striker could’ve done. Competition was too high in Glasgow and he was too far off a first-team spot.

However, he’ll have plenty of work on his hands to get himself up to English Championship standard. It’s an exciting challenge for him, and hopefully he’ll thrive down south.

In other news, a Sky Sports journalist has reported that Celtic have made an enquiry for another defender.
