Celtic have been linked with a shock January move for Brazilian defensive-midfielder Fernando Henrique, according to Ge Global.

The Brazilian outlet reported last night that Celtic are exploring the potential possibility of a deal in the next transfer window. It comes with the player struggling for minutes with Gremio in his homeland.

The report states that Celtic have been looking to find out how much Gremio would want for the player. Henrique is said to be determined to find a club with which he’ll be playing regular first-team football with.

Henrique signed a new contract with his current side only last year in which a release cause worth just over £33m was inserted [Ge Global]. However, his valuation appears to be in the region of £3.6m.

The Brazilian has only played 4 times for the club on league duty this season. Ge Global claims that there is also interest in clubs from the UAE to ahead of the January window.

Celtic signed James McCarthy to add to their midfield ranks over the summer, but have failed to see any kind of return on it.

Fernando Henrique to Celtic? Transfer fee could be everything

Put it this way, if Henrique signs for Celtic in January then it’s a bad look for McCarthy. He was brought in so signings like this wouldn’t need to be made.

It would be no surprise to see Celtic shopping for alternatives however. There are still no signs of the Republic of Ireland international making the impact we all thought he would when he first arrived. It’s been, to be blunt, a shocking start to his Celtic career.

It also won’t read well for the other defensive-midfield options at the club. Ismaila Soro must be wondering what he has to do to get another opportunity in the engine room. Signing Henrique over giving him another run would be pretty telling too.

But Postecoglou was always going to find out a lot about so many players between the summer and January. It’s no surprise to see that he’s potentially looking to spruce up certain areas. Based on what we’ve seen so far this season, the defensive-midfield could certainly do with a shake-up.

Henrique doesn’t have much senior experience to his name so far of course. The Brazil U20 international had only recently broken into the Gremio team. But it looks as though a parting of the ways between both parties is inevitable.

Let’s see if there’s anything in this come January.
