Brendan Rodgers has addressed Celtic’s lack of consistency this season and discussed what is now needed to go on a run that will make them champions.
Celtic’s longest winning streak this term was a six-match run between 23rd December and 27th January.
Surprisingly, that was the only time this season that the Bhoys have managed to win more than two games in a row in all competitions.
Celtic now have eight games remaining in the league season and many observers would consider all of them must-win affairs given that, as well as having a game in hand over the Bhoys, it is unlikely that Rangers will drop many points outside of the two remaining derbies.
For Rodgers, Celtic’s attacking game is looking sharp and just about as functional as he wants it but he’s called on his team to be more defensively resilient.
Brendan Rodgers on what Celtic need now in title race
Speaking in a media conference on Friday, the Bhoys boss said when asked about what’s needed to improve consistency [Celtic FC YouTube]: “I think from an attacking perspective, when we look at all the metrics around that, the attacking side of the game has been okay. The only thing might be efficiency in completing opportunities.
“Where we haven’t quite been the same is on the defensive side. I think that is what ultimately allows you to go on consistent runs.
“If you look at the runs we have done, they have coincided with both sides of our game being really good. Where we have been offensively very strong but also closed up the back door and not given too much away.
“That will be key for us. Having that defensive mentality and not giving too much away. At the same time, our attack creates that efficiency and hopefully, that will give us that consistency through until the end of the season.”
Celtic’s defensive situation
Celtic haven’t kept a clean sheet in the Scottish Premiership since January and while the Bhoys are more than capable of overcoming that to go on and win matches, it’s not an ideal trend.
The Bhoys conceded 23 league goals in total this term which, while impressive by normal standards, in the context of the title race with Rangers is seven more than them.
Odd goals here or there could have a say on which way this title goes, especially if it comes down to goal difference. It’s crucial that Celtic address their defensive issues and it’s positive that Rodgers is calling it out.
Cameron Carter-Vickers getting back to full fitness is a key part of all this too.
Hopefully, the United States international can provide Celtic with the platform to go on and string together the wins needed to become champions.
