Celtic boss Brendan Rodgers has apparently admitted that he’s interested in Andrew Gutman, according to the Daily Record.

The American left-back has been in the news in recent weeks for having a trial at Rangers. He was then offered a contact by the Ibrox club that has seemingly gone unanswered for now.

All of a sudden, Celtic have subsequently had an interest in the left-back. It’s led to intense speculation that the Hoops could make a move under Rangers’ noses for him.

It’s gotten even more intriguing as Gutman himself has started following the club on social media. And it appears that Rodgers may have backed up the claim that Celtic are monitoring the left-back.

According to the Daily Record, when questioned on January targets, Rodgers said the following:

“Some of the boys are young guys or project signings for the club that can’t come in straight away.

“But there’s nothing really to add on that.”

What would Gutman introduction mean for Izaguirre?

Should Celtic end up pressing ahead with a move here, and it’s likely they will, this would be a big blow for Emilio Izaguirre.

The Honduran only arrived back at Parkhead in the summer, but some unconvincing moments have led to supporters and manager losing some faith in the long-term Hoops servant.

Gutman, on the other hand, is just 22-years of age and one of the most highly-rated players in the USA. Bringing him on board to learn under Kieran Tierney could seriously strengthen Celtic’s depth in that area.

In addition to that, the club wouldn’t find itself in the same situation it did at Ibrox when Callum McGregor had to play at left-back. Gutman provides some key cover and could prove to be a real upgrade on an ageing Izzy.

It appears everything is pointing to Celtic eventually making their move for Gutman. It would also prove to be a good slap in the face from Celtic to Rangers, who also want him at Ibrox.
