Brendan Rodgers delivers immediate reaction to Rangers losing at Aberdeen as Celtic extend lead

Brendan Rodgers was satisfied with Celtic’s 2-0 win over Dundee this evening.

The manager watched his players huff and puff in the first-half before they tightened the screws after the break and netted through Alistair Johnston and Arne Engels.

The opener was a toe-poke from the substitute and the second was from the penalty spot but all that mattered was the three points and clean sheet to ensure the Hoops remain at the top of the Scottish Premiership.

The win keeps Celts at the summit with a superior goal difference but they are level on points with surprise package of the season so far, Aberdeen.

The Dons earned a 2-2 draw at Celtic Park earlier this month and have stuck along with Rodgers‘ troops.

And while it may be too early to be talking seriously about their title fight credentials, in the other big domestic match of the evening, Jimmy Thelin’s troops beat Rangers at Pittodrie to ensure they continue their strong start.

It appears the club from the Granite City are far more likely to provide a challenge for Celtic than the Light Blues but Rodgers refused to pay too much attention to the fixture in the north.

Celtic lead Rangers by nine points in the Scottish Premiership

Asked about Rangers’ defeat away to the Dandies on BBC Sportsound, Rodgers batted away talk of anything other than his side’s comfortable win over the Dees.

Although he did acknowledge Thelin’s side have started the campaign well and will take some beating this weekend in the League Cup semi-final at Hampden.

“My only focus is on ourselves, really looking at us improving our performance level as we go through the season. We’ve made a brilliant start domestically,” he said.

“We should win here against Aberdeen. We went a bit slack, but we’ll be better and learn from that.

“So I’m really pleased with where we’re at. The squad, the spirit, everything is really good. Some of the football has been fantastic and with lots of improvements to make, because it’s only 10 games.”
