Brendan Rodgers emerges as the ‘leading contender’ for Premier League hotseat after Celtic departure

Brendan Rodgers left Celtic three weeks ago today.

The 52-year-old’s departure was the culmination of months of disputes with the club, both public and private. Some saw it as inevitable, but the timing still came as a shock.

Dermot Desmond’s scathing statement left no doubt that he and Rodgers‘ relationship had reached a breaking point.

Since Martin O’Neill replaced him on an interim basis, Celtic have moved on with three wins in three domestically, though their European struggles continued.

And with the Hoops reportedly on the verge of permanently replacing Rodgers with Wilfried Nancy, the Northern Irishman is also back being linked with a job in England.

Brendan Rodgers is ‘leading contender’ to replace Premier League boss

Rodgers has been linked with a number of roles in recent weeks, but it isn’t known if he is looking to get straight back into management.

He has been touted for a stunning move to Saudi Arabia, also being discussed for a fairy-tale return to Swansea City, though the latter job could end up going to Russell Martin.

But it’s little secret that Rodgers still sees himself as a Premier League manager, and any role in the English top-flight would be difficult for him to resist.

According to TEAMtalk, Rodgers is the ‘leading contender’ to replace Daniel Farke at Leeds if he doesn’t turn their form around by next month.

Leeds are, of course, owned by 49ers enterprises. We’re getting to know that lot in Glasgow, and they’ve made a bit of a mess of it at Rangers so far.

They hired Farke upon relegation from the Premier League, and stuck with him after failing to go straight back up when they lost in the play-off final to Martin’s Southampton.

Rodgers would be a great get for Leeds, and given their squad, he would face a major task trying to keep them in the division.

He was reportedly in the running for the job at Elland Road when Farke was appointed two years ago, instead opting to return to Celtic with a ‘guarantee’ of honouring his three-year contract.

That went well.

Brendan Rodgers’ managerial career

Leeds would be Rodgers’ fourth Premier League club, after Swansea, Liverpool and Leicester.

He almost won the title at Anfield before being sacked and replaced by Jurgen Klopp. This was when he came to Celtic.

He went from hero to zero at the Hoops by leaving out of the back door to join Leicester City in 2019. Many fans never forgave him for this, but others understood his frustration at the club’s transfer business.

There is a feeling of deja vu after he left for similar reasons last month – it doesn’t seem like Desmond will ever forgive him this time.
