Brendan Rodgers explains why Dinamo Zagreb draw was Celtic’s missed opportunity

It was a game of few chances for either side as Celtic were held to a goalless draw against Dinamo Zagreb.

The Hoops did have moments but not enough to really test Danijel Zagorac between the sticks for the hosts in Croatia.

Nicolas Kuhn had a deflected strike sail over the crossbar when he might have squared to Kyogo while Paulo Bernardo had one or two half-chances.

Still, while the game lacked quality at times, it was a valuable point away from home in the Champions League where Celts may, in the past, have thrown it away.

For manager Brendan Rodgers, it shows the progress his side have made in Europe’s elite competition.

Disappointment in the stands from the supporters that their club failed to take all three points away from home in the tournament.

But Rodgers himself also acknowledged that while a point on the road is no failure, he does consider it a missed opportunity to get the win which would have guaranteed a spot for Celtic in the knockout playoff.

And considering Dinamo’s domestic form and boss Nenad Bjelica coming under pressure for recent results, it may have been the best chance to win.

Brendan Rodgers says Celtic missed the opportunity to beat Dinamo

“Do I consider it a missed opportunity to win away in the Champions League? Yeah, I think that’s my honest answer on it,” Rodgers admitted.

“We needed to do more. But we know that, and that’s cool.

“We are honest as a group, we know that there was an opportunity for us there but you have to show that little bit more in those moments when you arrive up there and too often it came away from us.”

As Rodgers was left with a sour taste in his mouth, rival manager Bjelica felt his side performed well against Celtic in what was a closely contested 90 minutes or so of action.

Though he did accept blame for making a mistake with his tactical plan.

What Dinamo boss Nenad Bjelica said about the Celtic draw

“These guys of mine played a great game today,” he said.

“Everything I asked of them they achieved. We didn’t allow anything to the opponent. We had a very good chance from Pjaca, two shots from Baturina… If anyone should have won, it was us. Rog and Kacavenda did a great job in the middle.

“None of them are the last midfielders, but they did a perfect job in defense and brought some momentum forward when they could. Defensively, we played.

“I made a mistake in my assessment of the first half. We let their stopper get the ball in too much, but today he was braver than in the games we analysed.

“We made an adjustment, switched to a different system, so we had no more problems. I am also satisfied with the players from the bench. It’s not easy to get into the rhythm of a game like this. We didn’t even have much choice. The 14 players who played were great.”
