Celtic will be looking for a new manager following the shock resignation of Brendan Rodgers.

A statement on Monday night confirmed that Rodgers had resigned from his position as manager of the Hoops.

Rodgers’ future had been in doubt with his contract up at the end of the season, but nobody saw it coming at this stage.

Dermot Desmond appeared to fire shots at the Northern Irishman in his statement, claiming that “Celtic is greater than any one person” and that the club had offered Rodgers plenty of chances to sign a new deal.

Now, this recent revelation has made the former Hoops boss’ comments earlier in the season all the more damning.

Brendan Rodgers said he wouldn’t leave Celtic mid-season again

After the disappointment of the transfer window, in which Celtic failed to land several key targets, speculation intensified about whether he would stay or go.

He had a history of doing so in the past, when Rodgers departed midway through the 2018/19 season to join Leicester City.

However, despite claiming that he wouldn’t do so again, the 52-year-old has broken his promise.

He told the media back in September: “The first time I was here, I probably left because of that [frustration at lack of backing]. But I won’t be doing that this time. Absolutely no chance – 100%.

“My duty is to be here and help the team, the squad, the club get back again and moving on.”

How will Brendan Rodgers be remembered for his second Celtic spell?

There will be mixed views on Rodgers’ second stint as Celtic manager.

On the one hand, he continued to be dominant on a domestic front, but the feelings of anger from how he departed the first time around never really went away.

Sections of the fanbase turned on him much quicker when things were not going to plan and there seemed to be a growing consensus that he needed to move on in the summer.

Given the frustrations towards the board, there may be more sympathy towards him this time around, but there will once again be a split on how he is remembered.
