Before today’s win over Livingston, Celtic manager Brendan Rodgers made it clear that Celtic Park is a much better environment for his players when there’s real energy in the stadium.
The Green Brigade and Bhoys fan groups were back in the stands for the 2-0 victory over David Martindale’s side after recent disputes with the club hierarchy.
There was a simmering atmosphere before kick-off, with supporters making it clear they were right behind the team despite last week’s booing in the wake of defeat to Hearts.
That translated onto the pitch too, with Celtic enjoying a dominant opening 25-minute period, creating several chances that should have put the game to bed early.
Of course, the team weren’t improved today solely because the Green Brigade were back, but a bit of unity and backing is an important factor in the Celtic experience.

Rodgers emphasised that before the game, stating [Daily Record, 23/12 print edition]: “This is such an emotional club, the team really responds to the support. Normally it’s in a really positive way. If it’s not quite ticking, then that’s really difficult for a club like Celtic, whether it’s to do with the manager, the board or whatever. We all want a successful, winning team on the field – and that will come from the support.
“I’m really hoping now that we can draw a line under the situation with the support base, and that we can all come together and unify. That is what makes Celtic tick, and be at their best. Celtic’s history is littered with late goals and a big part of that is down to the fans and the whole stadium getting behind the team. That’s what makes Celtic.
“When you have the manager, the supporters and the players all on the same page it’s a real force.”
And speaking in his pre-match BBC radio interview, Rodgers said when asked directly about The Green Brigade’s return: “This is an emotional stadium and when it’s like that it really fires up the team. There’s no doubt that’s been missing. I’m sure we’ll get a reaction and hopefully send the fans home happy for Christmas.”
There’s little doubt that this has been a tumultuous couple of months for Celtic, on and off the pitch. But today could be the clean slate everyone needs to take stock and consider the rest of the season.
If the Bhoys are to win the league this term then everyone needs to show a bit of unity, even when there are disagreements between supporters or a clash of opinion with the Celtic board.
It’s something that Ange Postecoglou harnessed so well. Now everyone needs to play their part. It’s a collective responsibility.
