Brendan Rodgers has outlined the next step for David Turnbull at Celtic.

The Hoops midfielder has been rejuvenated in recent weeks and netted a double after a surprise start against Ross County on Saturday.

Turnbull featured precious little last season but seems to have found a manager in Rodgers who has taken to him.

The Celtic man is out of contract at the end of the season (Transfer Markt) and could speak to other clubs as early as January.

Rodgers was asked about the contract situation at his Wednesday press conference and whether he would be looking to tie the midfielder down for longer.

“So long as the consistency, performance and mentality is right,” he said. (Celtic YouTube)

“He’s waited a bit of time here to get an opportunity. But, as I always say, the responsibility is with the player.

“If he can continue with the level of mentality and attitude to improve then he’ll be a great asset to us and the club.

“He’s doing very well but it’s consistency now.”

So there we have it, Rodgers wants consistency from Turnbull and clearly feels that is the next step in his development.

It is very early in the Turnbull re-emergance to make any sweeping statements. So far, he has only performed well against Ross County, one of the poorer sides in the league.

Sunday will be a bigger test if he starts while questions still remain over his suitability at Champions League level.

But the Scotland international seems to be enjoying his football again and that is important. In Rodgers he has a manager who knows how to get the best out of midfield talent.

If he needs any proof of that, he should have a word with Stuart Armstrong. A similar story would be a major boost for Celtic in our pursuit of glory this season.
