Celtic boss, Brendan Rodgers, has delivered an injury update on Cameron Carter-Vickers and Alistair Johnston after being left out of today’s League Cup match against Falkirk.

The Celtic boss made eight changes from the team that beat Slovan Bratislava in the Champions League midweek and two of those absences were explained by Rodgers.

Cameron Carter-Vickers already had a known issue with his foot and Alistair Johnston is suffering from some inflammation.

And this afternoon, Rodgers gave an update on where the Celtic duo are in terms of returning to first-team action.

Rodgers hails ‘brave and courageous’ Celtic hero

Speaking prior to kick-off, Rodgers was asked about the number of changes he had made to his Celtic lineup.

And whilst he admitted that some players were rested, Rodgers conceded that Carter-Vickers and Johnston were not fit enough to take part.

Rodgers said on BBC Radio Scotland, “Cam is injured so he wouldn’t have played anyway. We’ve been nursing him on a foot problem that he’s had for a little while, and the same with Ali.

“Ali, he had an injection to calm down some inflammation he’s had, so he wouldn’t have been available today either. So those two enforced.

“Just for today. Ali will start training with the team and then be ready. And Cam we will just have to wait and see.

“He’s had an issue with his foot, and he’s been getting some injections for that. And we felt that the game during the week there, he is just so brave and so courageous, he wants to play and put himself out there, but we have to make sure we look after him as well because it’s a long season.”

Celtic’s squad depth

Celtic’s squad depth will be vital for Brendan Rodgers this season with the fixtures coming thick and fast and also with European football guaranteed until January.

Rodgers brought in seven players this summer and has used all but one this season (Viljami Sinisalo) as the Celtic boss shows that the strength of the Hoops bench is going to be so important for him this season.

With Celtic’s next fixture away to St Johnstone, Rodgers will undoubtedly make use of his squad depth once again to keep his squad fresh without putting his defence of the league title at risk.
