Kyogo Furuhashi has signed a new four-year contract at Celtic.

But Kyogo is now contracted at Celtic Park until 2027 in what must be viewed as a massive statement of intent from the club.

Celtic announced the news on Tuesday morning, describing the move as a “major coup”.

Given the forward’s immense form since joining in July 2021, and close relationship with former Hoops boss Ange Postecoglou, there was fear amongst the Celtic support that he may leave this summer.

But Kyogo will be staying put for now, and we may actually have many more years of him in a Celtic shirt to look forward to.

New Celtic boss Brendan Rodgers is yet to meet the man who netted 34 times in all competitions last season. However, he has shared his thoughts on the new deal.

“It is brilliant news for the club,” Rodgers said in the club statement. “Kyogo is an important player for us so I am delighted he has signed a new contract.

“Kyogo has thrived since he arrived in Scottish football and has shown his outstanding qualities.

“In two seasons, he has secured five domestic honours, scored over 50 club goals and become a Treble winner. This takes a lot of hard work, dedication and sacrifice both on and off the pitch.

“He is an exciting player who is hungry to bring more success to our club. He has a great mentality and is an unbelievable talent.

“I am looking forward to working with him and helping him and the wider team develop to help drive the club forward.”

After some recent disappointment for Celtic fans, with fan favourites Jota and Aaron Mooy departing the scene, this news should act as a huge boost to everyone associated with the club.

It is fitting that it arrives from Kyogo — the player who has arguably brought the most joy to fans over the past two seasons.

The Japan international is adored at Celtic Park as much as anyone has been in years. Whisper it quietly, but he could go down as a club legend if he stays long enough and keeps scoring goals.
