Brendan Rodgers understands why Celtic fans expressed their dissatisfaction with today’s events at Celtic Park, feeling that the performance was not up to par.

There was a chorus of boos at the full-time whistle against St Johnstone, after supporters watched a frustrating 0-0 result play out in the Scottish Premiership.

Following on from last week’s Scottish League Cup exit at Kilmarnock, as well as some sluggish work in the summer transfer market, tensions are running high for more than a few fans at this point in time.

Asked about the audible message sent by supporters at full-time, Rodgers told BBC Radio Scotland: “I totally understand it. When you play to that performance level and get a result at home against any team, you’re playing a team with the greatest respect that haven’t won many games and have conceded goals, to not score or get three points is clearly not what we want or the supporters expect.

“You play or manage a club like this here you have to have that personality to gain results. If not the flak will come your way and you have to take that and work to make it better. It’s still very early in the season but you can see there’s lots of work to do.”

It seems clear from the booing and the general feeling around the club right now that there is little room for further error, despite the majority of this squad enjoying massive highs last season.

A tricky trip to Ibrox is now on the immediate horizon and fans are understandably trepidatious about what might occur across that 90 minutes.

The team must regroup and move on from what has been a pretty miserable fortnight. Injuries, poor results and concerns about transfer business have the support down in the dumps – it would be no surprise if this mood was impacting the playing group.

But it’s on Rodgers to earn his money and pull the squad together for some really testing fixtures over the next couple of months. Celtic simply can’t allow a crisis to unfold having been in such a position of strength.
