Brendan Rodgers suggests changes are coming to Celtic for weekend clash

One of the only Celtic players to take any credit out of Sunday’s defeat to Kilmarnock was new signing Hyunjun Yang.

The South Korean came into the game after 65 minutes with the Bhoys already 1-0 down and provided a more vibrant attacking threat than Liel Abada.

He did have one big flash in front of goal that perhaps should have been on target, but he was getting into the right areas and giving Kilmarnock far more to think about than other players.

The summer arrival was one of the few performers to earn credit from manager Brendan Rodgers after the game. And the Celtic boss has suggested that not only was Yang close to a start at Rugby Park, but is one who could come into his eleven very shortly.

He said [Celtic Way]: “I thought Yang was excellent when he came into the game. When I look at the team it’s that match-winning ability that we maybe need to have more of within the squad.”

And when asked specifically if he is close to starting, Rodgers continued: “Yes, he has been settling in really well. I thought he was excellent when he came on against Aberdeen. Today I thought he was really creative when he came into the game. He brought brightness to us in that attacking third.

“When there are no midweek games, most of the team that won last week deserved to play. Obviously, we had a few injuries but he certainly came into the game and showed up very well.”

It obviously depends on how well different players show up in training over the next few days, but it sounds as if Yang is closing in on that first start, so it could be a changed attack for the visit of St Johnstone.

Daizen Maeda struggled on the left flank against Kilmarnock and bringing Yang in for a chance of pace and a different style of approach could be the fresh tweak that the team needs.

A victory is a must in the Premiership, especially ahead of a derby, so Rodgers needs to find the right blend to break down the Perth side. The team can’t let Sunday roll into a second successive poor result.
