Celtic manager Brendan Rodgers has been speaking about the recruitment processes at the club and notes they can be improved moving forward.
The signings of Adam Idah, Paulo Bernardo, Kasper Schmeichel and Viljami Sinisalo have all been welcomed by supporters this summer but there’s a sense that transfer activity hasn’t moved as sharply as Celtic would have liked.
There are still two weeks remaining to get strong business over the line but multiple positions, specifically in defence, have to be strengthened.
How recruitment works at Celtic has been much discussed over the last couple of months. The club went into the summer having parted ways with head of recruitment Mark Lawwell, with no direct replacement appointed.
Asked for his thoughts on the subject today, Rodgers suggested changes will be coming behind behind the scenes.
Brendan Rodgers on improving Celtic’s recruitment
He said [Celtic TV]: “We need to improve that – not the people here. The people that are here are absolutely fantastic – the work they’ve put in over the course of the summer and going back over the months and being so diligent. They’ve covered many games, travelled out to games, they’ve done so much work on that front.
“But it’s still an area I think that we can review after the window and see where, like every area and department, where we can improve it.

“And I said it, I think it was last week, that recruitment is key, alongside your playing, management and coaching staff. Because as I said, if you don’t get that right, there can be very costly mistakes.
“So for us, it’s a constant look at it and where we can develop and improve it. But the guys that have been here, they’ve worked ever so hard going through the various options and availability of players to try and help us.”
Rodgers wants to be part of shaping Celtic in every respect
Back in April, the manager spoke about wanting to be part of a Celtic revamp in terms of restructuring the football department, talking up his experience of that across his career to date.
He sees his second Celtic stint as a long-term project so no doubt he’ll want processes in place that give him the best chance of securing the best possible players and taking the Bhoys to the next level.
What that looks like after the transfer window remains to be seen but it certainly wouldn’t hurt to have an experienced professional come in to bring a unified vision to recruitment and negotiations that supports Rodgers with his ambitions for the team.
