Celtic manager Brendan Rodgers has said there’s a possibility Reo Hatate returns to match action before the winter break, but he’s yet to assess the risk of him featuring.

Hatate has been out of action since limping off with a hamstring problem against Atletico Madrid in the UEFA Champions League back in October.

It’s been known he’s going through rehabilitation on the grass at Lennoxtown, but Rodgers has offered an update on his status this evening after the Bhoys picked up a 2-0 win over Livingston at Celtic Park.

Reo Hatate could return for Celtic quicker than expected

Asked whether or not the midfielder is in contention for a place in his match squad before the winter break, Rodgers said [The Scotsman]: “Possibility but we have to see on that. He’s been on the grass, been working well looks strong and fit, we just have to assess and weigh up the risk which is the key one.”

Meanwhile, Liel Abada is also closing in on a return, with the Celtic boss adding: “He’s getting there as well. We’ll just have to see, he’s been out for a little while. For Liel, if it’s not for the next few games then certainly the second part of the season. He will be a great help.”

If there are any potential ill effects of involving the players before they’re ready, Celtic won’t hesitate to leave them out.

The Bhoys really need both performers for the second half of the season it’d be worth it to keep them on the sidelines to avoid aggravating any issues.

However, Rodgers’ message on Hatate in particular is promising, noting that he is looking ‘strong’ at Lennoxtown. Perhaps he’s more ready for a return than many have assumed.

Even having them available as substitutes would be a big boost to Rodgers’ options in upcoming games, especially that derby against Rangers next weekend. Having genuine quality to bring off the bench for 20 minutes or half an hour could be key.

Keep your fingers crossed for positive news as the week progresses.
