He couldn’t manage it during an invincible or double treble, but Brendan Rodgers has finally achieved a united support in his departure from the club.

Football fans are fickle, it’s in their nature. However, even during unprecedented success at Celtic, the fans have always been split when it comes to their opinions on the team.

Sometimes it’s a player’s form, sometimes it’s over who’s the best man for the role. Sometimes the fans argue over whether the board are doing their job or not.

However, since Rodgers left Celtic for Leicester on Tuesday, the Celtic support have been united in their condemnation of a man they used to idolise.

In the few days since Rodgers left Celtic, there has been a united support behind the club. It’s almost an instinctive reaction. The fans are hurt and they are rallying around each other and the club.

The Celtic board, not without their faults by any means, have been given a new light to show themselves in. Many fans are now beginning to wonder if Peter Lawwell had Rodgers’s card marked for a long time.

The show of support for Neil Lennon and the team at Tynecastle is testament to the united support at Celtic at the minute.

A game where the performance didn’t matter at all. The fans just wanted three points. A show of defiance from the players that no matter what, the show must go on.

The players delivered for the fans in the end with Odsonne Edouard’s last minute winner. Although happy, the Celtic support is still one hurting.

During the invincible treble season, some fans were still hurt by the drubbing dished out by Barcelona in the Nou Camp.

European football was an area that split the support during Rodgers’s reign as a whole. Some fans believed his stubbornness to change his style cost the club.

Others believed in his process, and believed eventually he would get it right. However, now no one will know if that’s the case. It’s hard to imagine the next time we’ll see Brendan Rodgers manage in European competition.

A united support at last

It is not sure how long this united support at Celtic will last for. There is bound to be a split ahead in the future when it comes to the next manager.

Neil Lennon will undoubtedly have his supporters, no matter whether he closes out with a treble at the end of the season or not.

Other fans will want a higher profile name to replace Rodgers. Whatever way the Celtic board decide to proceed, they will almost certainly be the fall guys if their decision doesn’t pay off.

That is for another day. Right now let’s enjoy the fact that a united Celtic support is carrying the club through this week.

Celtic are a very tough nut to crack when everyone is rallying towards the same goal.
