Former Celtic hero, Matt O’Riley finally got his big move to the English Premier League this week after Brighton paid £30m for the Danish midfielder.

After months of negotiations between the clubs, Fabian Hurzeler finally got his man as O’Riley left Celtic this week to join the south coast club.

In a move that left much of the Celtic fanbase devastated but still wishing him luck, the Brighton fans were overjoyed as they waited in anticipation to see their new signing run out in the blue and white stripes.

That wait wasn’t too long as O’Riley was thrown in against Crawley Town in the Carabao Cup but his debut lasted just nine minutes after a strong challenge from Jay Williams resulted in the former Celtic man being carried off as fears grew about the extent of the injury.

Matt O’Riley requires surgery

The excitement surrounding O’Riley’s debut was, unfortunately, short-lived and it seems it may be sometime before The Seagulls see the Denmark international make another appearance this season after Hurzeler’s latest update.

Hurzeler told Sky Sports, “It’s like we expected, a bad injury. He needs surgery on his ankle. I can’t say how long we expect him to be out.

“We have to look at how the rehab will go. But of course, it’s it’s a tough one for us, but we will try to support him the best way we can.

“We will try to get him as fast as possible on the pitch and let’s hope he will be back soon.”

Wishing Matt O’Riley a speedy recovery

Everyone at 67 Hail Hail hopes Matt O’Riley makes a full and speedy recovery because if anyone deserves a bit of luck it is him.

The way O’Riley conducted himself throughout the speculation surrounding his Celtic future was exemplary as he continually gave 100% in every fixture.

And let’s not forget, O’Riley was absolutely pivotal to Celtic’s double last season finishing top goalscorer with 19 and chipping in with 18 assists.

Fingers crossed the surgery is a success and the Celtic fans will see O’Riley grace the Premier League sooner rather than later.
