Callum McGregor admits Celtic players probably impacted by new boss speculation

The appointment of a new manager isn’t an open discussion point in the Celtic dressing room but Callum McGregor admits that, unconsciously, they’re thinking about it.

Neil Lennon left Celtic two months ago and, despite speculation, the Bhoys have given no expectation on when a new manager might be appointed.

A variety of names have been linked with the post. The most notable has been Eddie Howe, though there’s been no real update on that situation for a number of weeks now.

McGregor admits that the noise can have an impact on players, but has called on his teammates to remain as professional as possible and not let their personal standards drop.

As quoted The Glasgow Times, he said: “Every time you represent yourself, the club, your family and you have to do things properly, regardless of silverware but you are still playing for pride.

“We try not to think about it [a new manager watching on]. It is a decision for the club.

“There is a lot of noise and subconsciously you are probably thinking about it, but us as players and professionals we have to do our jobs, keep representing ourselves, and when the club makes the decision you go again and it is a fresh slate.

“Everybody keeps pushing to impress the new manager, it doesn’t change.”

Celtic players need clarity on new manager as much as anyone

Everyone is, rightly, talking about the impact of this silence and uncertainty on the Celtic support. That’s a legitimate talking point with season ticket renewals on the way.

However, the group that needs clarity as much as anyone is the players.

Undoubtedly this squad have let us down this season. They don’t deserve much! However, in the interests of moving forward productively, they need to know what is in store this summer and beyond.

Champions League qualifiers are less than 12 weeks away. Meaningless games and the interim reign of John Kennedy is barely keeping us ticking over.

For me, this new manager business is dragging on a bit too long. I’m all for patience and ensuring the right decisions are being made on the new era, but surely we must be towards the end of this vacuum of information?

In other news, there’s at least a positive update on the contract situation of Karamoko Dembele.
