Callum McGregor now has his own chance to become a Celtic legend

In Callum McGregor, Celtic have a new captain. Officially.

In truth, it’s been known ever since Scott Brown left the stadium to head north that McGregor was the man in waiting for the role.

The only lingering doubt people had was that he might be tempted to head down south to pursue a career in a bigger league or look for no money.

That now won’t be the case after today’s club confirmation. McGregor is here to stay and now has his own chance of becoming a bonafide club legend.

Now don’t get me wrong. Whatever happens from this point onwards, McGregor will always be remembered as a successful and popular midfielder.

But, like Brown before him, immortality now awaits if things go well under his tenure. If he can lead the Bhoys back with a resurgence against Rangers and make himself indispensable to Ange Postecoglou, it won’t be forgotten. I’m talking real legend status.

We already know he has the ability. We know he can lead by example. By choosing to stay with Celtic and take on the captaincy at a critical moment he’s also signalling a career intent to be the main man at the Bhoys for years to come.

That’s exciting stuff for me. He’s already been the leading light in pre-season. From his on-the-pitch effort to every interview he gives about buying into Ange’s tactical ideas, you can tell he’s taking all this in his stride.

Let’s not kid ourselves, Celtic are in a bit of a state right now. But with guys like McGregor stepping up and committing themselves to the future of the club, things could be a lot worse.
