Celtic’s Callum McGregor might have found the back of the net in the 2-1 Boxing Day win over St Mirren. However, he was well-aware that his goal owed much to the quality possessed by Odsonne Edouard.

The Hoops striker’s run into the St Mirren penalty box caused all manner of defensive confusion, and McGregor was on hand to take advantage of that.

Edouard also played a significant part in Celtic’s second goal, setting up James Forrest. After the game, McGregor was at pains to point out how important Edouard is to the Hoops side.

“Such a platform for the team”

“He’s much more than a scorer. He’s creative, can hold the ball, come short. He’s terrific. He’s such a platform for the team and also a big scorer for us so to have him fit and starting will be a boost” McGregor said, as quoted by the Daily Record.

“He’s shown that in Europe, these games and cup finals. He’s always been the go-to man. We’re just desperate to keep him fit.”

It is testament to how well the Celtic team is performing that they have won 11 league games in a row even though Edouard has struggled with fitness issues during that time. His replacements in the side – Lewis Morgan for example – did a decent job.

A different team when player is available

However, it cannot be denied that Celtic are a different team when Edouard is available. He adds a quality to the side that is unmatched in Scottish football.

That will be why McGregor has admitted that Edouard’s team-mates are desperate for him to be fit. He can be the difference-maker for the Hoops.

Hopefully that will be the case when Celtic take on Rangers on Sunday. Unlike in the last meeting between the teams, Edouard should be fit to start the game. That could make a big difference to Celtic’s chances of picking up the three points.
