Celtic captain Callum McGregor is motivated to continue adding to the Bhoys’ domestic dominance this campaign once competitive action gets underway.
This Sunday, the reigning Scottish Premiership champions will unfurl the league flag ahead of facing Kilmarnock on home soil.
With Celtic yet to sign an outfield player this window, there have been grumblings of frustration from some supporters, understandably so.
Nevertheless, a strong pre-season showing from the Hoops, including victories over DC United, Manchester City and Chelsea, has lifted spirits ahead of another exciting season.
Now, McGregor has opened up on Celtic’s domestic aims for 2024/25, and he has also discussed potential transfer dealings at the club.
Callum McGregor on setting the ‘standard’ at Celtic
Cited via STV News, McGregor has signalled Celtic’s intention to continue thriving on the domestic scene, as he stated: “Domestically, we try to set the standard and look to win every competition we are in.
“There’s no arrogance in saying that, we want to be successful and we know how much hard graft and hard work goes into that and that starts at the weekend. I think the squad is good, we have some good quality, and I think we’ve seen that over the last two or three years that there is a real good core there, and we want to continue to build on that.”

Later, he added on potential incomings: “We don’t have the same resources as some of the big guns, but the club is doing its best to add some quality, and that’s what we always want as players, to improve the squad and have as much competition as we possibly can because that drives up performance and drives up the standard in training as well and ultimately that is how you are successful as well.”
You get the impression that despite any external noise, there is an element of calmness within the Celtic dressing room. Realistically, whether additions make their way into the squad is irrelevant for players already at the club; they can only control performances on the pitch and in training.
It pays to have a level head at Parkhead. McGregor has been at the Hoops for most of his life and never gets too high or low. Taking a holistic view, he does his job to a tee and instructs others he has influence over to follow.
That will be the hope this weekend when Celtic take to the field against Kilmarnock. Starting the campaign with three points would put a smile on everyone’s face and build valuable momentum.
