Celtic captain Callum McGregor only has an outside chance of making next Thursday’s Europa League encounter at home to Bayer Leverkusen.

McGregor has been struggling with a hamstring issue of late, with Celtic obviously unwilling to take any chances on his fitness for fear of picking up a more long-term injury.

Prior to last night, the latest on the Celtic midfielder was that he should make the visit of the Bundesliga outfit.

However, speaking to reporter Alison Conroy last night, Ange Postecoglou made it clear that was an outside chance, and far from a guarantee.

McGregor would be a big miss against the Germans. He’s become a crucial player on these European nights with his ball retention and positioning critical to Celtic midfield performances.

James McCarthy has come into the team and is still building fitness, but he’s just not the same player as our captain.

McCarthy will now likely get another chance to impress on Sunday at home to Dundee United, with Ismaila Soro the other defensive midfield option that Postecoglou could consider.

Celtic are having rotten luck with injuries at the moment but hopefully this time out of the side is conducive to McGregor having a long, consistent season in the team. A long-term hamstring issue doesn’t bear thinking about.

Cross all your fingers for the Scotland international’s inclusion in the Europa League.

In other news, Kyogo and his gesture leaves Celtic teammates smiling.
