Callum McGregor says Celtic plays want a quick decision on new manager

Celtic midfielder Callum McGregor has stated that the Hoops players want a decision made on the new manager as soon as possible.

Neil Lennon is currently the interim boss until the end of the season. But, despite that, there are no guarantees that he’ll get the job next season. It’s not been made clear as to whether it relies on him winning the treble treble either.

The next appointment is a crucial one for the Celtic board. The new man will surely be the individual that the club feel can steer us to 10 in-a-row. Therefore, you could understand just why the board would be keen to take their time and explore their options.

But McGregor, speaking in the Scotsman, believes a swift decision is what would suit the club the most.

“Obviously the club have to get the appointment right, whatever way they want to go about that and get it done. But everyone around the club wants to know as soon as possible so you have the continuity going into next season.

“Whatever the board decides, as soon as the players find out it calms everyone down. It gives the club a focus. The new season comes pretty quickly.

“You only have three to four weeks off and then it’s straight back into the big games again. The sooner it is done the better for everyone.”

Decision likely won’t be made until the end of the season

Whilst it’s important to get a man in ASAP, Celtic can’t lose focus of what’s on offer this season.

At the end of the day, the Hoops are still on for a treble treble. Given Lennon is still carrying out his temporary audition too, Celtic can surely only come to a conclusion after this season is through.

Appointing a new manager between now and the end of the season wouldn’t be fair to Lennon. He deserves to carry out the job of winning the treble treble without any unnecessary distractions.

McGregor does, however, have a point about the quick turnaround. Therefore, it’s essential that the board make a decision as quickly as possible after the Scottish Cup final next month (should Celtic make it).

If the board are wanting to hire Lennon, then they’ll surely want him to finish the season before rubber-stamping it. If the decision has been made to look higher than the Northern Irishman, Lennon deserves to finish the job without a new manager in the background.
