Callum McGregor has revealed that he gave his PFA Player of the Year vote to a Rangers player. The Daily Record reports the Celtic midfielder voted for his Gers namesake Allan.
McGregor also said that rivalry shouldn’t affect the process. He reckons that if a player has a good season then it shouldn’t matter what club he plays for.
“I just think Allan has been outstanding”, he said.
“There were so many moments when he was keeping Rangers in it in Europe with massive saves.
“His experience has been massive, bringing that team together. He was as good a candidate as anyone – and his name is McGregor!
“I really don’t know what the perception of that will be (a Celtic player voting for a Rangers player) but you can only be fair and recognise talent.
“If someone has had a good season, I don’t know why you shouldn’t vote for them.”
Celtic midfielder has to be favourite
The Hoops midfielder’s vote mattered little in the end. The Gers keeper missed out on a nomination for the top award with his teammates Alfredo Morelos and Ryan Kent joining McGregor and fellow Hoops star James Forrest on the shortlist.
McGregor looks like the front-runner for the award after another sparkling season. Many pundits have suggested that Gers striker Morelos should win the award but his disciplinary record could hold him back. The forward has been dismissed four times in the Premiership this season including during March’s Glasgow derby.
McGregor has been a consistent performer for Celtic this season. He’s featured in 32 of our 35 league matches, and scored three goals.
