Celtic and Scotland midfielder Callum McGregor thinks Leigh Griffiths can play himself into national team contention for next month’s huge playoff against Serbia, speaking to The Sunday Post.

Griffiths made a thrilling comeback into the Celtic set-up against St Johnstone in our last match.

McGregor has lauded the player’s work ethic ahead of a busy period for the club.

The midfielder believes he can make a breakthrough back into the Hoops side and the Scotland squad.

As quoted by The Sunday Post, he said: “He knows himself that he has to get out on the pitch and play games for Celtic. Scotland would then be looking at him to come in and help the group.

“It’s just a question of whether Leigh can get himself on the pitch enough to be included in the squad. He is working hard every day, and those are the demands we put on ourselves as footballers, to be fit and available for selection.

“It’s down to him, down to us, to get him as fit as can be. Get him on the pitch. Because, as I say, his quality is undoubted.”

Griffiths hasn’t started a game for Celtic since March and hasn’t been included in a Scotland squad since way back in September 2018.

He’s very much on the fringes of things for both club and country, but as McGregor points out, the striker’s ability is undeniable.

His crucial goal in Perth was further proof he’ll always be a valuable member of Lennon’s group and can come from nowhere to make a huge contribution.

The way things are going, he could get even more game time against Rangers at the weekend, and who’d bet against him stealing the headlines again?
