Callum McGregor sounds all but ready to be a one-club man at Celtic
Celtic midfielder Callum McGregor signed a five-year contract on Friday, and it appears he’s ready to commit the rest of his playing career to Parkhead.
The Hoops captain is now tied to the club until 2026. A fine gesture from Celtic as to the levels in which they believe in McGregor’s ability to lead the club forward.
Last year was a difficult one for the Scotland international. However, under Ange Postecoglou, he looks to be reborn once again. Thriving in the engine room, Callum has been a key cog and vital for the midfield’s balance this season. His loss was felt badly in last week’s 1-0 loss at Livingston, for example.
And after signing the new deal, he interestingly made the following remarks as quoted by the Scotsman:
“Yeah, this is obviously the next stage, the next five years. If I manage to see that out, and it’s been a pretty successful time, we can re-evaluate. If they’re still happy with me then we go again. I love playing for this club. As long as they’ll have me, I’m happy to be here.”
Interesting that McGregor doesn’t talk about a potential move further down the line. In fact, it’s as if he actively looks to avoid that narrative as much as possible.
Instead, it comes across as though McGregor only has his eyes for the Hoops. If he gets through the next five years, he would clearly want a new deal. And it’s not as if he’s going to head south at the age of 33.
Callum McGregor has never denied wanting to end his career at Celtic
Of course, this isn’t the first time McGregor has hinted that he could stay at Celtic for life. He said the same after signing a new deal back in 2019. Back then under Neil Lennon, the midfielder said the following as quoted by the Daily Record:
“Yeah, I think so. It’s a real possibility. It’s a massive statement from the club. Obviously, I really value how highly they regard me at the club as well. I am certainly looking forward to the next few years. Hopefully we can extend that even further and I could end up finishing my career at Celtic.”
And you have to say this latest contract is yet another big move towards ending his career in Glasgow. If he was going to leave the club, it would’ve been now.
It’s superb that Callum is looking to give his peak years to Celtic. It’s the biggest compliment a player can give a football club. Of course, when a heavy offer comes in, it remains to be seen what the outcome would be. We’ve all heard this kind of stuff before like with Kieran Tierney for example [The Herald].
But what McGregor has done is put his future in the hands of the club. There’s no chance of him going on the cheap at any stage during his peak years. That’s great news for the club and a sign of intent from McGregor.
Time will tell whether he truly does go on to be a one-club man. But all the signs are certainly there for it.
