Callum McGregor's classy role model remarks that will resonate with Celtic supporters
Callum McGregor has explained the Celtic responsibility he holds close to him every day; being a role model.
Having come through the youth Academy, and now as the captain of the club, McGregor understands what it takes. Watching the likes of Nakamura and McDonald from the sidelines as a ball boy, he’s had a full and thorough education of what it means to play for Celtic.
Following the example of the greats that came before him, then, is imperative. It takes more, though, than the odd word of encouragement, McGregor says. In an interview for the Celtic View Podcast, the Celtic captain outlined what being a role model means to him.
McGregor said [Celtic View Podcast]: “I think there obviously will be kids out there and young players looking at the first-team at the minute and selecting their role model in that sense.
“So, you are fully aware that you are that kind of role model and you do things in the right way.
“Especially for young boys coming up, I’ve been in their shoes, so you try to help them as much as possible, put the arm round them and give them little pointers, make them feel welcome.
“At the same time, there is still a standard that you have to be at. It’s striking that balance of being nice, but not being too nice. They’ve got to feel on edge too, a little bit. You are aware of that, course you are, and I try to carry that with me in most things I do.
“You realise you have that responsibility as well when you play of this club, there’s a certain standard which you try not to drop below.”
Callum McGregor had some Celtic greats to learn from; now it’s his turn to share the wealth
He says all the right things, does Callum McGregor.
In the same interview, he talked about the influence of the late Tommy Burns, along with Danny McGrain, who’s still at the club. Not only that, guys like Scott Brown have helped him along the way, and now he’s looked to as a leader for Celtic.
Now, the time has come to share his knowledge. But his approach is interesting; most players would say vague things like “I always try to give advice”. McGregor getting into the nuts and bolts of it, and expressing the lessons he’d learnt from his role models, is quite a refreshing approach.
There have been problems along his path, sure. But McGregor has developed into an excellent Celtic captain. Passionate, a classy operator and desperate to maintain the standards of the club, he’s become a mix of skippers past.
At times, he has the fire in the belly of Scott Brown. Other times, he’s more like a Paul Lambert, Jackie McNamara or Tom Boyd – leading by example, and keeping the head.
It’s insightful stuff from the Celtic captain, and we’re sure Callum McGregor will have a positive influence on the next generation of Hoops talents.
