Calvin Miller’s Celtic future must now be up for discussion

Calvin Miller’s Celtic future can certainly be put up for debate after Celtic’s latest signing.

The arrival of Boli Bolingoli-Mbombo has thrown the future of Kieran Tierney up in the air. With the £3million price-tag he arrives with (The Herald), it’s a question that deserves to be asked.

But one player we’re forgetting in all of this is fellow left-back Miller. He made his breakthrough under Brendan Rodgers back in late 2016, and was transformed into a defender. It looked encouraging for him at times under Rodgers, as he showed some good attacking traits whilst looking as though he needed some work defensively.

Unfortunately for him, Tierney has been ahead of the youngster. The arrival of Emilio Izaguirre and the emergence of Jonny Hayes didn’t helped him either. But now, with Bolingoli-Mbombo’s arrival, things look bleak once again for Miller.

He said before the season began that he was looking to break into the first-team squad this season (The Times). But just where do the opportunities now come from for the former Ayr United loan star?

Miller is an extremely promising young player. If he doesn’t make it at Parkhead, he can at the very least make an impact elsewhere in Scotland. But for him, at 21-years of age, games are a necessity for him. And weekly game-time at that.

If Miller could get a loan move to a fellow Scottish Premiership rival this season, it could be exactly what he needs to get noticed. He’s experienced and passed the test of Championship football, that much is clear after his 14 appearances with Ayr United where they managed a promotion play-off position.

And he also made a decent mark at Dundee too in the first half of last season, managing 16 games at Dens Park. Jim McIntyre’s arrival saw Miller forced out of the club, but a similar move must be on the agenda at the moment.

As it stands, our development plans for next season remain up in the air. Celtic may have a plan for the reserves next season, but nobody knows of it as of yet. And considering we aren’t going to be in the Reserve League anymore, it’s best pushing Miller out to another club.

Chances, if they even do come at all, will be seriously rare for him. He could be looking at just a small handful if he’s fortunate with the talent Celtic still have in that position.

So at the moment, Miller’s career is at a crossroads. Hopefully, the club can help him make the right decision at this stage of his career.
