Cameron Carter-Vickers told he should be ‘looking over his shoulder’ at Celtic teenager

Celtic’s defence is an issue ahead of the new Premiership season.

The one player every Celtic fan will agree on as one of the starters is Cameron Carter-Vickers because he has been the best defender in Scotland since his arrival under Ange Postecoglou in 2021.

Throughout Celtic’s productive and challenging pre-season, Brendan Rodgers handed a fair few young players and academy stars the chance to prove their worth.

One of them included teenager Colby Donovan, who was part of Celtic’s pre-season camp, and he also made a name for himself in Cork.

Cameron Carter-Vickers told to ‘look over his shoulder’ at Colby Donovan

Donovan scored the winning goal as Celtic beat Cork during the start of pre-season, and Frank McAvennie has seen a fair bit of him this summer.

Speaking on his Let Me Be Frank Podcast, McAvennie thinks that Carter-Vickers should be ‘looking over his shoulder’ at someone like Donovan coming through.

“I keep going on about it,” said McAvennie. “I think we need a left-sided centre-half.

“Do you know what? I like the boy, is it Donovan? And the boy Murray didn’t do badly at centre-half.

“The boy Colby Donovan is sliding into tackles and winning tackles. I am thinking, ‘wow,’ so he was doing well.

“Carter-Vickers should be looking over his shoulders on that one. Trusty was brilliant (against Newcastle United), but they need a left-sided centre-half.”

Celtic told to ‘forget about buying more wingers’

What Celtic have been doing this summer, and how they have been going about their business, has been a huge talking point.

Wingers or wide attacking have been a hot topic, but McAvennie has told the club to ‘forget about buying more wingers.’

McAvennie is more worried about the middle of the park and how Celtic need a Victor Wanyama, Scott Brown or Neil Lennon type of midfielder.

“Forget about buying more wingers, we need a number six,” added McAvennie. “We need somebody to sit in there, yeah (like Victor Wanyama), Scott Brown, or Neil Lennon. I was talking to Lenny, and for me, it’s obvious.

“We have got boys that can go forward. But when we lose the ball, which we are going to do sometimes, it’s all about getting it back. If you can’t get it back straightaway, all of a sudden, they are on top of the defence because there is no in between.”
