Carlisle United chairman Andrew Jenkins has confirmed that his club have received no offers for in-demand centre-back Jarrad Branthwaite.

The Scottish Sun reported at the start of December that Branthwaite was being monitored by the Hoops. With a lack of cover for both Christopher Jullien and Kristoffer Ajer, a central-defender or two would be ideal this January.

The Daily Mail revealed last weekend that Carlisle will be wanting £800k for their youngster, who has managed to play 11 times for the League Two side this season (Transfermarkt).

However, it appears as though they’ve yet to be offered anything as things stand. Speaking in comments published by the Evening Times, Jenkins said the following on his star-man’s current situation:

“The Branthwaite saga continues and all I can say is that we have had no concrete bids from any clubs, so most of what you read are agent-led rumours. It is up to the club to transfer players in or out, not agents.”

Lack of experience could put Celtic off

Branthwaite has only really burst onto the scene this season, and doesn’t know anything other than League Two football. If Celtic are going to be recruiting for further centre-back cover, it’s difficult to see the Carlisle man as having the experience to fill that role.

Celtic have recently taken the route of signing young talent from English clubs and putting them in the development side. The likes of Luca Connell, Jonathan Afolabi, and Lee O’Connor are prime examples of this. If we were to sign Branthwaite, it would seem to be a similar move.

There isn’t much to fear when it comes to the asking price either. 800k would hardly blow our budget, and with 18 months remaining on his contract (Transfermarkt), it would appear to be a deal that’s there if we want it.

However, many Celtic fans would agree that there are more pressing concerns this month. Getting a new centre-forward in as well as some wide cover would be most ideal. Even a couple of centre-backs who could slot into the first-team squad too.

Yet this also seems like a deal that Celtic should move quickly on if we want him. After all, Rangers were also linked with Branthwaite in the Sun’s report. The likes of Everton and Watford have been linked with him too (News and Star).

For now, it seems as though there’s been no movement, but it’s certainly early days yet.
