Celtic announce departure of Leigh Griffiths to Dundee on loan
Celtic have confirmed their first piece of deadline day business after the departure of Leigh Griffiths to Dundee on loan.
Griffiths has been frozen out after off-field issues plagued his pre-season campaign. Only weeks beforehand he was offered a new one-year deal in what appeared to be a final chance to save his Celtic career.
However, he’s yet to play a single minute of competitive action under Ange Postecoglou. Of Celtic’s 11 competitive matches this season so far, Griffiths has only made the matchday squad for two of them.
He joins the Dens Park club on a season-long loan deal. It remains to be seen if a renaissance in Tayside will lead to another opportunity at Parkhead.
The Scottish Sun reported last night that Griffiths saw no future for himself under Ange Postecoglou.
Leigh Griffiths joins Dundee; looks to have played final game for Celtic
This isn’t a surprise. Celtic always looked like getting Griffiths off the books on deadline day. He simply wasn’t going to make it under Postecoglou, and he won’t have been on minimal wages either.

Of course, what it does do is see Celtic lose a body in the final third. With Odsonne Edouard also likely to depart today, the Hoops need another option in addition to the potential arrival of Georgios Giakoumakis.
For Griffiths, this is a fine move. He joins up with a man he knows well in Dundee boss James McPake. It gives him exposure to Scottish Premiership action on a regular basis, and a chance to get back into international contention with Scotland.
But you can’t help but feel this will bring to an end his Celtic career. A career that saw him net 123 goals in 262 appearances [Transfermarkt].
Unfortunately, the striker has also come with plenty of baggage, particularly over the last few months. His reputation with supporters has plummeted, and it was clear an exit needed to be made.
Whether his departure becomes permanent? It’s difficult to see him coming back from this.
