Everton goalkeeper Asmir Begovic is relishing the opportunity to go up against Celtic in the Sydney Super Cup later, feeling it will be a good test for a Toffees side in need of rejuvenation.

The Goodison Park outfit have been under severe scrutiny and pressure over the last few weeks after a run of bad results that has them in a precarious Premier League position.

Begovic is set to get a rare opportunity to impress with Jordan Pickford off to the World Cup and is excited to face the Bhoys, as well as play up against Joe Hart.

As quoted by The Daily Record, the veteran goalkeeper said: “It will be a good test for us. Celtic are a very good team with a very good manager.

“I’m sure there will be a great atmosphere as well. There’s always a bit of rivalry when teams from Scotland and England meet and there is the connection here with the Celtic manager as well. We’re hoping to put on a good performance.

“Joe is someone I know really well and he’s a great goalkeeper. He deserves all the success he’s had. It’ll be nice to catch up with him – and hopefully we can stick a couple past him! He’s someone I’d admired in the game, absolutely. I have huge respect for him but I’m sure it’s mutual. Joe is someone I’ve always tried to compete with and measure myself against.”

Although only a friendly, there’ll be a bit of meaning in the match for both camps. Neither will want to lose, certainly. Everton because their poor run and Celtic because a second successive defeat in his homeland wouldn’t be ideal for Ange Postecoglou.

It’s likely to be an open, competitive affair with both elevens going at it, albeit potentially rotated significantly in the second half.
