Celtic behind schedule compared to last January’s transfer business

Celtic’s need for signings is quite urgent following the recent 2-1 loss to Rangers, which handed the initiative to the Ibrox side going into the second-half of the season.

With the transfer window now four days old, you would expect the Hoops to have some deals in the pipeline. However, it looks as if the club will fail to match the urgency of last season’s transfer business.

On the 5th of January last season, the Hoops announced the loan signing of Olivier Burke. This was followed up on the 7th by the signing of Timothy Weah, also on loan.

At the time of writing – the 4th of January 2020 – it seems unlikely that the Hoops will have one deal, let alone two, completed by the 7th this year.

Is that something to be concerned about? That remains to be seen. Perhaps Neil Lennon is right to take his time before making any January deals. After all, this window could determine the destination of the league title.

Another factor to take into account is that the Hoops will be looking to complete permanent deals and not loan deals, this window.

Maybe if the deal is correct a loan move would be ideal in certain circumstances, but Celtic should be looking for players who will be at the club for years to come.

Neither player was that successful for Hoops

Interestingly, neither Burke nor Weah turned out to be that successful for the Hoops. Both performed well in flashes, but Celtic have managed to thrive since the duo left the club.

Maybe that is another reason that Lennon and Celtic are taking their time, as in the past January deals haven’t always worked out.

Celtic will no doubt do business in the January transfer window. However, perhaps it is best if the Hoops take their time, if last season’s results are to go by.
