Celtic boss Ange Postecoglou brilliantly reverses rivals' Europa League narrative

Ange Postecoglou has insisted that Rangers reaching the UEFA Europa League final only adds to Celtic achievements this season, rather than detract from them.

Supporters of the Ibrox side are understandably buoyant in the wake of Thursday’s semi-final win over RB Leipzig. We would be too.

However, there’s been a suggestion that their European run is overshadowing what the Bhoys have managed to do in Postecoglou’s debut season.

Some are even shamelessly crowing that their Europa League exploits prove Rangers are a better side than Celtic.

Ange Postecoglou says Rangers run only adds to Celtic achievements

Ange is having none of it, telling The Scottish Daily Mail [07/05 print edition, page 122]: “To win a title you have to be better than every club in this country. That is who ends up being champions. So that is what we are going to try and do.

“Rangers’ European success has been well-deserved by them. They’ve had a great run in Europe and are a good side, a very good side. They were champions last year and undefeated for that year. They have done well in all the competitions this year.

“You know, I don’t think that (Rangers’ European run) detracts from our achievements. If anything, it adds to our achievements if we can become champions. Because for us to become champions, then I don’t think anyone can deny we have had to beat some pretty strong opposition.”

Ange won’t let anyone downplay successes

Postecoglou is an outspoken, honest character. If he senses that anyone is trying to downplay what Celtic have done this season then he’ll be right on it. He won’t let that take hold.

Rangers have a right to feel happy with their European run, but it doesn’t make what Celtic have done irrelevant. They don’t have to try and manufacture misery to enjoy themselves.

Most Celtic fans are delighted with the way this season has gone to this day. If we can get over the line in the title race everyone will be very happy this summer, regardless of what happens across the city.
