Celtic boss Ange Postecoglou makes SFA appeal decision

Celtic manager Ange Postecoglou won’t be appealing to the Scottish FA to overturn Callum McGregor’s red card against Motherwell at the weekend.

Late in the match, McGregor was forced to haul down Ross Tierney after a Reo Hatate error, preventing a certain goalscoring opportunity.

Replays showed Stephen Welsh was possibly covering Tierney’s advancing run, perhaps showing up the red card as harsh.

At the weekend, Postecoglou suggested in his post-match press conference they would have a look at the incident again and potentially appeal. However, he has now confirmed that will not be the case.

As quoted by The Glasgow Times, he said: “No, I had a look at it on the replay and I think it’s fair enough. I said at the time that I thought maybe Welshy had some cover there, but I think it was a fair enough decision.”

It means that the Celtic captain is now certain to miss the match away to St Johnstone on Saturday. That will be the only fixture that McGregor is absent for due to suspension.

With Aaron Mooy also picking up an issue in training yesterday, we could see the first start for Oliver Abildgaard after he made his debut off the bench against the Steelmen.

McGregor’s suspension certainly isn’t ideal but Hatate has already apologised and it’s just something Celtic will have to deal with. We should have the strength in depth to overcome the McDiarmid Park test without an issue.
