Brendan Rodgers knows that today’s Celtic defeat to Hearts was a costly one for his team but remains bullish about his team’s position in the Scottish Premiership title race.

The Bhoys slipped to a 2-0 loss at Tynecastle after significant controversy involving a red card and penalty that went against them.

Rodgers didn’t hold back with his comments on referee Don Robertson and VAR John Beaton in post-match interviews, letting everyone know he felt there was incompetency on display in that regard.

Ultimately though, Celtic have missed their chance to punish Rangers after they were defeated at Ibrox on Saturday. A win would have put the reigning champions back at the top of the table.

Nonetheless, Rodgers is feeling good about where his side are right now and has reiterated that their destiny is in their own hands, despite what everyone is saying about the Ibrox outfit.

The Celtic boss said [The Scotsman]: “You would never have said yesterday before Rangers lost to Motherwell at home that they would lose. Everything I hear is that they are going to win every single game through to the end of the season. But we know it’s about us.

“It’s still very much in our hands. We’ve got 12 games to go. Nine league games and we want to be in the cup final on the 25th of May. We will fight for every competition we will be in.

“We had the chance to go top. It was unfortunate the way the game panned out for us. We now have to recover and go away and get to the semi-finals next weekend.”

It’s easy to put too much stock into single games or weekends and what it means for the title race at large. However, there’s every chance this one is going down to the wire and the last couple of games, so nothing has been decided today.

Rodgers also knows that the upcoming derbies will be absolutely pivotal. It can’t be ignored that the Bhoys have won the derby at both Ibrox and Celtic Park this season.

Celtic have every reason to feel like everything is still in their own hands despite remaining in second place. We’re all set for a blockbuster end to the campaign. Players, staff and fans must hold their nerve.
