“He’s come in and been fantastic. We think he’s a talented player and hopefully he’ll continue to develop and flourish at Celtic” Lennon said, as reported by the official Celtic Twitter account.

Connell could make his Hoops debut in Saturday’s Celtic Park friendly against Rennes. It will be interesting to see how often he plays for the first-team this season.

Judging by the manager’s comments, he could be a first-team regular fairly soon. A question that has to be asked is who will Connell replace in the team?

May replace first-team regulars in time

Perhaps he will be the long-term successor to Scott Brown. Or perhaps he can replace Callum McGregor on certain occasions.

The fact that Lennon talks about the player’s development could indicate that he will mostly be a squad player at best this season.

It would probably be too much to expect Connell to be a regular for Celtic this season. However, he is only at the start of his Celtic career.

In time, he could become a very important player for the club. Neil Lennon certainly seems to think that this could be the case.
