Celtic boss singles out "unbelievable" Callum McGregor

By John McGinley

July 31, 2021

Celtic captain Callum McGregor has been heavily praised by new manager Ange Postecoglou ahead of tonight’s encounter against Hearts.

McGregor has been a standout performer in pre-season friendlies as well as the two competitive matches so far.

His stunning strike on Wednesday night was worthy of winning any European night, but sadly it was not to be against Midtjylland.

As Postecoglou looks for leaders and experience in his squad, he could not express more admiration for McGregor in his pre-match press conference.

The manager said [Celtic YouTube]: “At the moment, we’re still a very young group. I don’t know what the average age was of our starting eleven the other night. But I think Callum McGregor has done an unbelievable job as a leader in these first few games. He’s just stood up in performance, attitude, everything.

“But he needs help. He needs some other experienced heads in the squad.”

Callum McGregor has had a great start as Celtic captain

I do think McGregor looks re-energised by the responsibility of being captain. He has his doubters still, bizarrely, but at his best he is comfortably one of our most talented players.

The tie may not have gone our way against the Danes, but the early signs from McGregor as an individual were positive. If he can carry that kind of form into the Scottish Premiership, I have no doubt he can help us find consistency in results.

If we can strengthen the team around McGregor, he has the potential to be our key man. Especially in the number eight role he’s been given a bit further forward in Postecoglou’s midfield.

I’m looking forward to seeing what he can offer tonight against Hearts after Wednesday night’s exertions.

In other news, Postecoglou comments suggest Nir Bitton Celtic role against Hearts.
