If Celtic are keen to revitalise and replenish a weary squad then they’ll have to bring in several new recruits this summer. The club is in dire need of players in some key positions while a general freshness in other areas would be beneficial too.
One thing that Neil Lennon can’t afford to do this summer is get in to bidding wars. The majority of players we’ve been linked with in recent days have also been courted by a number of clubs.
The likes of Rekeem Harper and James Justin are said to be interesting numerous employers. That could have serious implications for us.
Overpriced and too lengthy
Getting into a bidding war with an English team (especially a top-flight one) is never a good idea. They have the financial muscle to blow us out of the park with a run-of-the-mill sum. On the odd occasion we do outbid them the chances are that we will have paid an excessive sum.
We also can’t afford for transfer dealings to drag on for too long. We’ve got crucial Champions League qualifiers at the start of July and it would be great to have the majority of our new signings in place for then. Quite simply, we need players in now and the board can’t afford to shirk that responsibility.
Celtic haven’t really been involved in too many transfer bidding wars in recent seasons. The majority of our signings under Brendan Rodgers were clinched with little or no speculation. Things are likely to be different this summer, just maybe not for the better.
