Celtic captain addresses the Aberdeen player who has helped him “so much”

Celtic captain Callum McGregor has been discussing Scott Brown in the build-up to tonight’s class at Pittodrie between the 2 sides.

The Hoops will face off against Stephen Glass’ Dons in the Granite City in what’s bound to be another feisty affair. Despite Aberdeen’s troubles this season, they’ve only lost both games to Celtic with a 1-goal margin.

Parkhead legend Scott Brown has been a key figure in both of those matches, but in the red of Aberdeen after his summer move to link up with Glass as a player-coach.

Tonight, he’ll come up against his old protege for a 3rd time this season when he and McGregor lock horns. And as Callum reserved some pre-match praise for his former captain, he admitted the pair don’t speak in the build-up to these clashes.

As quoted by the Herald, Callum said: “We don’t speak before the games or anything like that. We’re both obviously wanting to win the game for our clubs. It’s going to be a good battle, he’s obviously a top, top player and has been for many years. He helped me so much in my development as well.

“We’ll always have that mutual respect, but as a sportsman you go on the pitch and you would do anything to win, and so would he. We’ll go again [on Wednesday] and hopefully we’ll be the ones with the three points at the end of the night again.”

Callum McGregor vs Scott Brown III – can Celtic captain make it 3-in-a-row?

Glass has been playing it coy on whether Brown will actually feature tonight. His captain was left out of the squad to face Livingston last weekend, in a move that backfired given the Dons lost 2-1. However, in the build-up to tonight’s game, Glass hinted via the official Aberdeen website that there is a doubt over his availability.

Then again, Glass and Brown will be doing everything they can to ensure the former Celtic man is ready tonight. These are the kind of matches he was brought to Pittodrie to try and influence.

And you can’t say he hasn’t been a worthy foe this season. Brown has been a tireless worker in both games against Celtic, but particularly on our last visit up north back in October when we won 2-1. Broony actually came close to scoring too with a diving header that was kept out by Joe Hart.

The Brown vs Celtic storyline is one that will always be of constant intrigue. Whilst he’s yet to come back to haunt us in a game, there will always be that fear that he’ll inevitably have a say against us.

It’s going to be Callum’s job to ensure that doesn’t happen. He clearly enjoys these games against his former captain and mentor. You can see just how much he’s looking forward to another trip to the Granite City tonight.

And the truth is we need everyone in a similar mindset. Aberdeen won’t make anything easy for us despite their poor form – not with Brown leading them out.
