Celtic captain Callum McGregor has set a shining example over the years in the engine room for both club and country.

To date, the 30-year-old has made a staggering 455 appearances in green and white, registering 64 goals and 76 assists in the process, per Transfermarkt.

On international duty, McGregor has 53 caps to his name with Scotland, comprising one part of a formidable midfield trio that also includes John McGinn and Scott McTominay.

Unfortunately, the Lennoxtown product has missed the Bhoys’ last two competitive matches against Heart of Midlothian and Livingston due to a calf/Achilles issue.

Brendan Rodgers has issued a hopeful update on his injury status, stating last week: “Fingers crossed again, we can get to the bottom of that, and he’ll be available after the international break.”

He has also been ruled out for the upcoming break in Scottish Premiership action. After being omitted from Steve Clarke’s squad, he will miss the Tartan Army’s friendly clashes against the Netherlands and Northern Ireland.

Nevertheless, Rodgers’ comments do indicate there could be light at the end of the tunnel, with McGregor likely to be a major part of our ongoing push for a domestic double upon his return.

Celtic captain Callum McGregor nominated for SFWA award

McGregor has been an exemplary player for Scotland over the last 12 months, alongside his exploits for Celtic, and is now up for nomination to win the William Hill Men’s International Player of the Year Award.

Angus Gunn, John McGinn and Scott McTominay have also been put forward for the prize, which the voting process is open for until March 18th [Scottish Football Writers Association].

The prize accounts for all matches Scotland have played since June of last year. The winner will receive the award at a ceremony on 18th May at DoubleTree by Hilton Hotel in Glasgow.

Of course, McGregor is no stranger to winning individual awards; regardless, it is nice to see his contribution recognised by the wider Scottish footballing public in light of his importance under Clarke.

For now, his injury recovery will take priority over anything else, as he uses the international break to get back in good condition ahead of the run-in.
