Celtic captain Callum McGregor in classy phone call with new Bundesliga coach
New Hertha Berlin assistant coach Mark Fotheringham has touched on the classy phone call he received from Celtic captain Callum McGregor.
Fotheringham has taken up a new role with the Bundesliga club as they look to avoid relegation this term. The new gig sees Fotheringham link up with Felix Magath in a deal running until thte end of the season.
Fotheringham and McGregor both actually played together during their Notts County days back in the 2013/14 season. Since then, they’ve both gone on very different pathways with Callum absolutely sky-rocketing at Parkhead.
And the new Hertha assistant has revealed how he’s already heard from McGregor as he looks ahead to his new challenge.
As quoted by the Scottish Sun, McGregor said: “I appreciated the call, and I’m so proud of Callum’s career. He is a wonderful player who could easily star in the Bundesliga.
“I’m confident we can guide the team to safety. I’ve worked hard to get to this stage, and I’ve sacrificed a lot of family time, but it doesn’t daunt me to work in Germany. I was in the company of Sir Alex Ferguson as a kid when he was trying to sign me for Man United before I went to Celtic.
“Tommy Burns, Kenny Dalglish and Martin O’Neill were major influences for me — as was playing with greats like Henrik Larsson. So I’m proud I’m going to be a coach in one of Europe’s top leagues, but there’s no way I’m going to just settle for this.”
Mark Fotheringham set for a big few months as Callum McGregor shows his class
It’s an extremely interesting role Fotheringham has picked up in Germany. You have to say it’s a major step-up for him too considering he’s just come out of working with Ingolstadt in the third-tier of German football.
The next few months are going to be absolutey crucial for him. It’ll be those months that determine whether he has a long-term future in Berlin or whether it’s all going to fizzle out for him.
There’s plenty of time for Fotheringham and Magath to keep them up of course. They’re only 2 points behind with 8 games to play. A lot of football has still to occur and it’s clear Hertha have moved swiftly to avoid any further declining standards.
As for McGregor, it’s yet another insight into the classy nature of the man. He really is a proper Celtic captain both on and off the pitch and it shows here.
And Fotheringham isn’t wrong. McGregor is a player whose technical ability would surely be a standout in the German top-tier. That would certainly be an interesting blend. Callum has had the ability to work in Europe’s top leagues for years.
Hopefully, it’s not something we ever get to see as he continues to give his best days to Celtic.
