Callum McGregor has addressed comments from former Ibrox captain Barry Ferguson about targeting the midfielder in Saturday’s derby between Celtic and Rangers.

Ferguson admitted in his Daily Record column this weekend that he’d received stick for saying Philippe Clement’s team should be looking to take McGregor out and foul him at Celtic Park.

McGregor is only just returning to full fitness and was back to form in last week’s 3-0 win over Hearts after adjustments to this training regime.

Again feeling in good health building up to this one, many expect the Bhoys leader to be instrumental in the outcome of today’s result.

McGregor is clear about Ferguson’s comments. He’ll be happy if all the Rangers focus is on him.

Callum McGregor on being targeted by Rangers

He said [Daily Record, 11/05 print edition]: “That’s the theory. If they’re concentrating on me, then someone else can go and win the game for us!

“When these types of things are being said about you, you have to take it as a compliment. But we have a system where, if you try to overload one player, we can hurt you in different areas.”

McGregor has been there and done it when it comes to this derby so isn’t going to be taken aback by any tactics he sees today.

McGregor’s impressive record against Rangers

The Celtic captain has faced the Ibrox side on a massive 37 occasions and has avoided defeat 70% of the time with 20 wins and six draws.

He’s scored four goals and assisted three more in that time but it’s his supporting work for the rest of his attacking teammates that makes him such an effective option.

If Celtic manage to win or draw today they’ll have one hand on the Scottish Premiership trophy, closing in on McGregor’s 21st major honour with the Bhoys.
