Celtic have, undoubtedly, the strongest midfield in the Scottish game.

Reo Hatate, Aaron Mooy and Matt O’Riley are the three players that have been stealing all the headlines recently.

And working industriously in the background is Callum McGregor.

Callum has been imperious since taking over the captain’s armband for Ange Postecoglou and the respect he has from the dressing room has been well-documented.

But because he is so consistent, because he is so good at what he does, the Celtic captain doesn’t get the praise he so richly deserves. Until now.

After his heroics against Cyrpus and Spain, former Celtic striker, Andy Walker was waxing lyrical about the Celtic talisman.

Speaking on The Go Radio Football Show, Walker said, “I’d say he’s grown into one of the players that Stevie Clarke is relying on for a really good performance against the top teams. We will go up against a dangerous team next time round in Norway. Callum McGregor, he’s got to be one of the most important players that are playing for Scotland at the moment.

“The fact that he’s got all that experience and that he can play every minute of every game. The thing that really impressed me about him was late on when we were under a bit of pressure with everyone back and then there was a break down the right-hand side.

“He got away from about two challenges that could easily have brought him down. And he kept going and kept going and then still had the quality play the pass into Shankland’s feet. Fantastic.”

Are Callum McGregor’s performances underrated?

Not by anyone at Celtic or the fans. We see week in, week out what he offers the side.

We can see how he leads on the pitch and the players are constantly reminding us that he sets the standards at training that drives the rest of the squad.

As for the rest of the country, I think now that they have seen him mix it with Spain and come out on top of some of the best players in Europe, they now see what we see and are now starting to appreciate just how good he really is.
