The Scott Brown picture of him being “punched” by Rangers’ Ryan Kent was an infamous one after Celtic beat Rangers in March.
Coming out of the contest, it was perhaps one of the biggest talking points. How Kent managed to avoid a red card for the act was incredible. And, as expected, it went down well with the Ibrox supporters who needed something to take from the game.
Brown, however, wasn’t one for grudging it. He would be contacted by a friend of late Rangers fan Gordon Thomson. And after being asked to sign a painting of him being struck by Kent for charity, Brown agreed to sign it without hesitation.
It’s one of the joys of Brown’s personality that he agreed to do so. And, speaking to the Scottish Sun about it, the Hoops captain spoke about putting rivalry aside for a good cause.
“It’s true, I did sign the painting of me being punched. It’s nice to be nice sometimes. And it’s a good picture — probably the best I’ve looked!
“I’m happy to do it if helps a charity or maybe someone who’s in a bad place. If someone’s willing to bid for it at an auction then I’m willing to help out.
“Yeah, I’m getting punched in the photo, but I’ve been punched by better people! I will probably be punched again in the future too! If you can help out, I don’t see any harm. Ryan and I were happy to help and it was Geo Thomson who did the canvas.”
The Brown picture shows true class
It’s probably something that the Celtic captain didn’t get enough credit for at the time. Plenty of footballers would’ve simply turned away and refused to sign it. After all, it wasn’t the most cherished of moments Brown will have in a Celtic shirt.
But, at the end of the day, Brown has always been about being charitable. It’s one of the traits of his personality that gets overlooked far too often by his doubters.
He’s also managed to have a slight pop at Kent in his comments too, which is a nice bonus! In truth, it was poor from the Rangers man, and showed an extreme lack of temper and class.
Celtic would end up winning the game 2-1 thanks to goals by Odsonne Edouard and James Forrest. Rangers had equalised through Kent earlier in the match, but the Hoops were the better side and deserved the victory.
Hostilities between the two Glasgow sides are perhaps at their worst ever. Therefore, it’s always nice to see acts of class in this manner being carried out, regardless of what side of the divide it’s on.
